Consultant Stroke Physician – Somerset NHS Foundation Trust

Base: Musgrove Park Hospital

Salary: £105,504 – £139,882 (dependent on experience)

Contract: Substantive / Full-time or part-time / Flexible working encouraged

Are you ready to shape the future of stroke care in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK?

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is excited to invite applications for Consultant Stroke Physicians to join our growing, passionate, and innovative stroke team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to contribute to an ambitious and well-supported transformation of Somerset’s stroke services, including the launch of a brand-new Somerset-wide Hyperacute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Musgrove Park Hospital in 2026. You’ll work alongside a collaborative team of 6 consultants and 4 specialty doctors, with strong support from specialist nurses, ACPs, therapists, and a progressive management structure.

Our stroke service delivers:

  • 24/7 thrombolysis and access to thrombectomy at Bristol Southmead via AGWS telemedicine
  • Daily HASU and weekday ASU consultant-led ward rounds
  • 7-day TIA clinics and comprehensive outpatient services
  • Dedicated stroke rehabilitation units and an award-winning Early Supported Discharge (ESD) service
  • A robust research portfolio with support from stroke research nurses

This is more than a job, it’s your chance to join a service delivering top-tier outcomes in the SSNAP audit and help shape future services in an integrated, forward-thinking Trust. Our vision is underpinned by investment: £15 million into Yeovil District Hospital, a new surgical centre at Musgrove Park, and a new MRI and CT-perfusion service aligned to GIRFT recommendations.

We welcome applicants with energy, ideas and a passion for patient-centred stroke care. You’ll be supported with a clear job plan (10 PAs, with 1.5 SPAs), mentoring, and opportunities in education, quality improvement and leadership. Flexibility, part-time working, and those new to consultant posts (or approaching CCT) are warmly welcomed.
